I-Tunnel, the Re-Design of the Link Between the Graduate and Undergraduate Libraries: New Updates Coming Soon!!

In the Fall of 2003, eight teams of Senior students in Architecture and Industrial Design developed concepts to improve the tunnel sequence.  Some of these concepts were selected for further development.  The concept selection process was based on ability of any vision to transform given space to provide for a stimulating, relaxing and aesthetically pleasing experience while also considering the feasibility and projected cost of implementation. Three visions that met these criteria most effectively were selected and presented to the Chancellor and UIUC officials.  These three concepts received additional funding for implementation. Students who accepted invitation to participate in phase 2 developed  a Unified Vision, along with students who had just signed on to the project. After a Unified Vision of the Tunnel was created implementation begun in the late Spring.

Phase 0/ pre-Fall 2003 - Initiation + Fundraising
Phase 1/ Fall semester 2003 - Ideation + Concept Generation + Concept Selection
Phase 2/ Spring 2004 - Unified Concept + Refinement
Phase 3/ Summer/Fall 2004 - Construction + Implementation

Spring 2004

Implementation of the Tunnel Vision Project began early in April of 2004. The first phase of construction was the removal of the existing seating from the North Wall of the Tunnel during Spring Break. As soon as the primer was dry the Tunnel team began painting the "mural" on the North Wall. The "mural" is derived from a color theory pattern in which certain colors can elicit emotion from those experiencing them.

Summer 2004

After a short break at the end of the Spring Semester, work resumed on the Tunnel. During the summer the team began construction work on the furniture forms, which were to be installed in the Tunnel. Experimentation was also done on the finishes for the seating forms. The "mural" work on the South Wall was done thus completing the mural. And the floor inside the Tunnel was removed in preparation for the new tile installation. A story on the tunnel work was also run in the Daily Illini.
