UIUC alumna Betty J. Ritter died at age 81. Miss Ritter graduated from UIUC with an architecture degree and went on to work at Skidmore Owings and Merrill and later at Perkins and Will. She had also worked as a phone operator, magazine editor, and had a pilot's license. She had served on the board of Des Plaines Library, Des Plaines, IL, since 1993. Her architecture background contributed greatly when the library underwent construction that completed in 2000.

World's tallest bridge is now in France. Millau Viaduct connects Paris and Barcelona over Tam gorge in 1.6 miles. The highest elevated road deck is at 1125 feet. The bridge was designed by Foster and Partners, and it's worth $412 million.

Taipei 101, or Taipei Financial Center, is recognized by a global architectural group to be the tallest building in the world. The building reached its record-breaking height last October when a pinnacle was installed on top of the building. Taipei 101 has 101 stories. Its 508-meter, or 1,679-feet, height is 57 meters, or 184 feet, taller than the former tallest building(s) in the world, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The memorial for Princess Diana--Princess Diana Memorial Fountain--in London's Hyde Park was designed by Seattle landscape artist Kathryn Gustafson. Construction fee was $6.7 million. It opened this July (and was closed this July, too, but now reopened again.)

Zaha Hadid, British architect born in Baghdad, has been awarded the 2004 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, a prize that "honor[s] living architects whose built work demonstrates talent, vision, commitment, and contributions to humanity and to the built environment." Hadid is the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The award ceremony will take place at the State Hermitage Museum of St.Petersburg in Russia on May 31.
