Show pictures in slides (one by one)

On the morning of April 23, 2005, four troops of girl scouts arrived at Temple Buell Hall. In order to obtain their architecture badges, they had come to fulfill the requirements for the badge, and WIA was ready to give them a hand. Corresponding to their requirements, we had set up activities for the scouts to do. These activities included slide shows on architecture around the world and architect Toshiko Mori, house-building with popsicle sticks and glue, drawing a room in scale, and tours of campus buildings and studios. The scouts were to keep an idea file where they put down their thoughts and ideas about architecture as they experienced architecture through the activities. Volunteers were recruited ahead of time to lead them in the activities and answer questions.

The girl scouts were first led to Plym Auditorium for a slide show by Rachel Lannan on architecture around the world.

After Rachel's presentation, Kira Ho talked about Toshiko Mori and her works, successes, and struggles as a minority woman architect.

After each of the presentation, the scouts were given time to write down their thoughts to their idea files.

Afterward, the troops were spread out to different activities. One started with drawing in scale, two started with the tours, and one started with house-building.

For building a house, we had prepared popsicle sticks, glue, and cardboards for the girls. There were no limitations on style, type, size, or what to include or what not to.

For draw to scale, we brought the troops to a room in TBH and they were to draw the plan of that room. First, the volunteers would teach them some basics of drawing a plan. Then the girls had to measure the dimension of the room with measuring tape and record the results. Finally, the volunteers would walk them the steps of drawing a plan in scale while the girls drew their plans in their idea files.

For the tours of campus buildings, our route was a circle starting at TBH atrium, then via the west side of south quad, we reached the undergraduate library, Foellinger Auditorium, and back via the east side of south quad, we returned to TBH. In the tour, volunteers provided history and information of each building walked by, as well as the buildings surrounding the main quad.

For the sixth-grader girl scouts, we also introduced to them AutoCAD. Kira Ho illustrated the use and usefulness of AutoCAD.

At the studio tour, Jenni Traut brought the troop to her graduate studio and explained her project to the girls. She talked about the process and stages of a project assigned in class and, when asked, explained the differences of school studio and real life practice.

We also brought the troop to see how ADA was integrated at the Architecture Building.

All of them were very happy with their works.

Our volunteers! Thank you very much for everyone's help! Please come again next year!

The volunteering experience was a fun and successful one. We are very glad that we could give out to the community. Thank you to the girl scout troop leader for providing us the opportunity to work with you and the girls. Thank you to all the volunteers; we couldn't have made it a success without you. It is likely that we will be doing this again next year. If you're interested in participating next year, be sure to come to our meetings or visit the website for updates!
