Our annual Chicago Firms Tour took place on April 8 this year. Firms that we visited were Crandall Ritzu Architects,Fitzgerald Earles Architects, Inc., Hutter Architects, and Ross Barney and Jankowski Architects. Also we were able to meet with Melissa Bogusch for lunch.

Fitzgerald Earles Architects, Inc.
We arrived at our first firm, Fitzgerald Earles Architects, Inc., around 9:35am. Principal Daniela Fitzgerald told us her story on starting her own firm and the difficulties that she faced along the way.

Fitzgerald Earles Architects, Inc. is a 10-person firm. Their works include residential, health care, Chicago public schools, ADA, and renovations for capital, gyms, existing warehouse, etc.

Hutter Architects, Ltd.
Owner Pam Hutter explained to us many aspects of an architecture business. To be a successful architecture, one must pay attention to the clients. To survive in a business, one must notice the time and the world and make adjustments accordingly.

Hutter Architects LTD is a small-sized firm with three architects. 50% of their projects are residential and the other half commercial. They also do some day care, school works, industry, and baseball clubs. 90% of the total are in Chicago.

Lunch with Melissa Bogusch at Wishbone
Melissa Bogusch is the former president of Chicago Women in Architecture, a prominent member of AIA Chicago, and a UIUC Architecture alumna.

Ross Barney and Jankowski Architects
At Ross Barney and Jankowski, they showed us around the three-level office and introduced projects that the staff had been working on or finished. They explained to us their work methods and environment. One of their projects include Champaign Public Library here in Champaign!

RBJ has about 35 staff. Of all of their professionals, half of them are women. Of their RAs, also half of them are women.

Crandall Ritzu Architects
Principal Architect and owner of Crandall Ritzu Architects, Carol Crandall, offered us not only refreshments but also lots of tips on being a quality architect. She also told us the difference between the school culture and work culture and how to survive in the architecture field.
