![]() On April 17, 2004, WIA hosted the first annual female faculty luncheon in 370 Wohlers Hall on campus. It was a two-hour luncheon in which female faculty, students, and parents from the Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning departments could interact professionally, socially, and personally. This year, we were very fortunate to have Professor Kathryn Anthony and Professor Lynn Dearborn from Architecture, and Professor Faranak Miraftab from Urban & Regional Planning, attend our luncheon. |
![]() In preparation for this event, we distributed invitations to students in the three disciplines and further extended the invitations to parents since the event was to take place during the Univerity's Mom's Weekend. Attendents included architecture undergraduates and graduate students (Masters, PhD) from all three areas. |
![]() The buffet lunch started around 12:15pm. |
![]() When we finished eating, Dani, our president, welcomed everyone present and gave an introduction of each professor to us. |
![]() We went around the table to introduce ourselves. |

![]() Each professor talked about what areas they specialized in. They also talked about how women stand in architecture and urban planning academically and professionally. |
![]() Professor Anthony brought along her two books (Design Juries on Trial and Designing For Diversity) and passed them around for us to observe. |
![]() Then each professor answered the question of how they managed their career and personal lives. Each professor has faced problems in one life that conflicted with the other. However, they were able to resolve them at the end and integrate their professioanl and personal lives to accommodate the demands of both. |
![]() Lily Wu, sophomore in architecture, studied seriously Prof. Anthony's Designing For Diversity. | |
![]() In the course of time, parents talked about how they felt about their daughters in their respective studies. They posed questions on studios and were provided impressions from the professors and students. One topic was on design presentations--how the jury or critics affected the performance of students in different environments such as a casual studio setting and a formal critique. |

Guests were welcomed to take a souvenir with them. It was a mug with our new logo hand-painted on. We'd done everything in our ability to ensure the safety of the mugs/paint. So please be assured that it's safe to drink from them! |
![]() Apparently, the mugs were really attractive that Lily and Catherine each got more than one (for their friends, according to them)!! |

The professors, at various times, commended WIA in supporting women in the male-dominated field. We thank you for the commendation and we'll for sure try our best to realize our goal to strengthen women standing in the field. Our first faculty-student luncheon was a great success. We appreciate those who came. We hope you liked our little souvenir. Please join us again next year! We look forward to seeing you there again! |
