Habitat for Humanity Project
The City of Champaign, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans as well as many of the individuals across the community have made generous contributions to make a family's dream come true. Antonette Gant and her son, Lamar, live in Champaign and proudly participated in the ground breaking for her house on July 27th. Antonette is a third-shift factory worker in Rantoul and Lamar, 4, spends his time with his Grandparents and pug puppy. Antonette is a hard working single mother who needs a new house for her and her son. Since the ground breaking, the footing has been laid, inspections were passed, framing, roofing, and flooring have been done. Finishing effects, like painting and trim work still need to be done; all they need are the volunteers.
First Informational Meeting: Feb 21 @ 7pm @ Plym Auditorium TBH; Dinner will be served at 6:30pm
Laura Huth, Executive Director, and Jeanette Lang, Volunteer Coordinator, from Habitat for Humanity for Champaign and Piatt Counties will be talking to us about Habitat, the process, the volunteering, and how to get involved.
Nursing Home Project
The Urbana Nursing Home has an unoccupied room and they hope to use it as a computer room for the residents. The residents will also need some lessons on using the machines, such as sending emails, web-browsing, etc. They already have the computers and have found volunteers as the technical perons to set them up. They now need someone to build tables to support the computers, paint the walls, and anything to beautify and make useful of the room. On Bingo Night in March, we went to the nursing home and have gotten a feel of the place and the room. In May, we painted the walls of the room. What still needs to be done is building the tables, etc. If you're interested in volunteering with us, get first-hand info by emailing Jenni <wia-arch@uiuc.edu> or stay tune with us!
Bingo Night: Mar 16, depart at 6pm at circle drive of Union

Students and professors from architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning departments are invited. And no, it's not a requirement to bring your mom with you.

Girl Scout Architecture Badge Volunteer
We will be hosting activities for 3-4 girl scout troops for them to earn their architecture badges. This event will take place for a 3-4 hour time slot on Saturday, April 23rd. We have planned 6 activities to fulfill some of the badge's requirements. They are as follows:
1. Idea file - the girls will get blank sketch books to record their architecture ideas and anything else throughout the day. This will be the first activity and the girls will start by decorating their books or the first page with a drawing that they think reminds them of architecture or their favorite architecture.
2. Slide show - this will include two parts: architecture from other countries, and one female architect's work. It will be around 15-20 minutes.
3. Building tour - tentatively, it would be a walk north just past Foellinger Auditorium so they can see the quad and learn about that architecture, around Foellinger and back towards the business quad (all the while pointing out different arch aspects of bldgs), After that, a studio tour where they can see the studio space, models, all the tools architecture students work with, etc.
4. House of sticks - back inside to build a house out of popsicle sticks and glue.
5. Draw to scale - up to a review room in TBH to measure and draw it out on graph paper - then imagine it is a bedroom and draw where the furniture might go.
This will a wonderful and fun event! We will need volunteers to lead the troops to tour, oversee their progress and point them to the right direction during the various activities. And it's a great opportunity for you to apply what you've learned in classes to teach others. It is now your chance to tell your audience how the Illini Union and Foellinger line up in plan and how to use a triangle!! Sign up now!!
Date/Time/Location: April 23rd, 9am-1pm. Meet at Plym Auditorium.
