Originally born in Pakistan, Umber moved to the United States in 1988.  Traveling with her family she lived in several cities throughout Pakistan until early 1988 when Umber and her family relocated to the suburbs of Chicago.  While attending school at the Illinois Institute of Technology (¡¯94) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (¡¯95), Umber worked for several architectural offices in Chicago to help pay for school.

In 1996 she transferred to the university of Illinois at Champaign Urbana to receive her BSAS in architecture.  To help pay for school she worked at Henneman Raufiesan & Associates in Champaign until she graduated in 1998.  After graduation she returned to the Chicago suburbs where she was offered the position as Intern designer at RSI International Inc.
