Place Dauphine, Development began in 1599, with resumption of work on the Pont Neuf, which had been started in 1578. The Pont Neuf crosses the Seine at the western end of the Isle de la Cite. In 1604, Marie de Medicis commissioned an equestrian statue of the king, to be located where the bridge crossed the island. The adjacent Place Dauphin was planned in 1607.
