Kathryn has been teaching architecture and involved in research at the University of Illinois since joining the faculty in 1984. She is a Professor and past Chair of the Design Program Faculty at the Building Research Council at the School of Architecture, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She also serves on the faculty of the Dept. of Landscape Architecture and the Gender and Women's Studies Program. She was one of the first women in architecture at her school to receive tenure and promotion to Full Professor. She is the author of over 100 publications, including three books.

- environment and behavior, with a special emphasis on housing (particularly the housing needs of special user groups including single-parent families, persons with physical challenges, etc.) and healthcare
- gender and family issues in public restrooms
- transforming architectural practice into a more humane environment, especially for those underrepresented in the profession, with a special emphasis on designing for diversity
- transforming architectural education into a more humane environment for students and faculty, with a special emphasis on design juries and design education

- Design Juries on Trial: The Renaissance of the Design Studio (NY: Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1991, re-printed by CPS, University of Illinois), a book which unravels some of the mysteries of design education. It provides a guide for students to master the design jury and design studio both in school and in practice. It involves surveys, interviews, observations, and diaries of over 900 participants: students, faculty, and practitioners. Among those interviewed were 30 award-winning designers, including Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, E. Fay Jones, Cesar Pelli, Cynthia Weese, and others
- Designing for Diversity: Gender, Race and Ethnicity in the Architectural Profession (Urbana, IL: University of Illinois Press, 2001). The book is based on surveys, interviews, and archival data from over 400 architects nationwide. It highlights both the turmoils and triumphs of the profession, and it offers ways to make architecture a more diverse profession, one that provides equal opportunities for all
- Running for Our Lives: An Odyssey with Cancer (CPS, University of Illinois, 2004).
Waves of publicity about promising breakthroughs in treating cancer hit the news stands every year. Barry Riccio, struck by leiomyosarcoma at the age of 38, and his wife, Kathryn Anthony, benefited from these novel treatments. In these pages they tell their story. Running for Our Lives is one of the first books to document this new era of cancer research from multiple viewpoints of the patient, his medical team, family and friends. In gripping detail, it chronicles the authors' seven-year emotional roller coaster ride across five states and scores of doctors, nurses, and medical staff and explains how their persistence, research, and outreach helped them wage their battle
